Maxwell step off
the bus leaping down the steps and still in pain. He looks around and decides
to walk up the block. Maxwell turns
around and asks the driver for the time, yet the driver shuts the doors and
pulls off as if he was late. He comes across a house abandon and broken into
several times, as the neighborhood itself has gone to hell. The sidewalks have crack, the gate of the
house has rusted, and the old taping of the yellow warning sign are floating in
the air. Maxwell climbs the gate
already making the decision to break into the house. A young woman walking a small dog comes around the corner
and sees him jumping over the gate. She
isn’t surprised that he is doing it just frustrated that another person thinks
that they can use empty house as a free living space.
Young women
Hey! Hey! Hey you!
What do you think your doing there?!
Maxwell stops has he is taking by
surprised that someone saw him go over the gate. Her voice gets louder and louder, as Maxwell
hears her walking over.
Young women
(screaming)
Hey! Hey! Hey! What
the hell you don’t live their?!
Maxwell doesn’t turn around as he
hears her stop by the gate and a dog barking.
Maxwell
I am sorry I was
just walking when I just lost my keys.
Thought it might be over this way.
Young woman
Well you can’t just
jump a gate onto someone property even though you might lost something. Ahhh…..Maybe I can help you.
She ties the dog to the gate and
enters.
Maxwell
I am pretty sure I
am alright. I can find it.
Young woman
No, I think I
should help and plus it should go a lot faster.
Maxwell
Ahhh… if you think
so I guess it will
Young woman
No, I know it will
and get you away from this property so I don’t need to call the cops on you.
So, what exactly did you lose?
Maxwell
It’s a key I am
looking for. I stopped and tried to get it off my key ring and it flew
off. I didn’t find it in the street so
it must of flew somewhere in the garden.
Young woman
I’ll just help you
look better then two people looking then one. These weeds are really bad and
the city refuses to take care if them
She opens the gate
and walks into the garden to help him look for his keys.
Young woman
So, how long did
you live in this neighborhood anyway before moving.
Maxwell
You can say most of
my life. My parents moved before the
summer came. How about you?
Young woman
I just moved here,
don’t really know anyone around here.
Maxwell
So, why care if
anyone jumps the gate.
Young woman
I don’t know, maybe
its not the right thing to do. People
break into this house almost everynight like its nothing. If they only know what happened to the family
don’t think they would do what they do. Ummm…. Weird…. I am not finding a key
anywhere around here.
Maxwell
You might know me
if your from this area. I use to leave
down the block in that blue house and a friend of mine use to live here, but I
guess they moved as well too. Wait!
(He turns around to
her.) What happened to the family of
this house?
She takes another look
at him and realizes who he is.
Young woman
Wait…. Your Maxwell
Brown! Your kid I hear that got into the fight before first period and end up
getting beating up for today at school.
Maxwell just looks at with a bit of
surprised and frustration.
Maxwell
Yeah that’s me……
Young woman
Sorry, just
surprised your walking around from what I heard what Tyrone and his jerky
friend knocked you unconscious.
Everybody was worried.
Maxwell
Yeah I guess. I
wished someone helped me out though.
Young woman
Yeah, it’s sad how
other people just stood there watching and laughing.
Maxwell
Well, things happen
I guess right. So, back to what happened to the people that lived in this
house. What happened to them?
The young woman sits on the steps of
the house and looks down on the ground.
Young woman
Oh, it was on a
Tuesday during the summer. I was coming out for a run when two officers showed
up at here. They knock for a few hours when I came back they where bring out
the bodies. The mother, father, and two
some kids. Later, that day on the news
it told the story of what they found in the Hudson River. The son of the parents was found sloating in
the Hudson River and when police came to tell the family. They discovered them
massacred. It was rumored that the son
was doing something illegal that got him into something deep but no one knows.
Wait you sad you was friend with the kid that lived here.
Maxwell
Yeah, his name was
Marve Graves and he was always getting in trouble. His dad was always in and
out of the hospital and mom barely was able to work, and he was taking care of
his siblings. Thought he quite running in
the streets and got a job. Before I left
he was working for some guy has a deliver person but that the last thing I
heard of him.
She stands up and walks toward
Maxwell, as he looks up at the house.
Young woman
I wish you said
something earlier.
Maxwell
What do you mean?
Young woman
Everyone needs to
have their moment and seems like you need it now and here.
Maxwell
Thanks.
The young woman walks away, unties
her dog and walks down the block.
Maxwell is surprised at what
happened to his best friend and takes the chance to find out what happened. He
walks on the side of the house and sees the basement window, as he picks up a
rock and throws it threw the window. He
slides into the basement threw the window and end falling on to the floor.
